Discover, Learn & Care for Creation
Veld School Camps
Explore the outdoors. Discover life’s lessons. Learn to care for God’s creation.
At Moolmanshoek Leadership Development Centre, our Veld School Camps offer learners the opportunity to explore the wonders of nature, develop practical outdoor skills and discover the importance of caring for the world around them.
Set within Moolmanshoek Private Nature Reserve in the breathtaking Witteberg Mountains of the Eastern Free State, our Christian veld school programmes combine hands-on environmental learning, exciting outdoor experiences and meaningful personal development.
Here, the natural environment becomes our classroom, and every experience is an opportunity to learn, grow and appreciate the beauty of God’s creation.
Learning to Care for God's Creation
We believe that caring for creation is a responsibility entrusted to all of us.
Our planet is an extraordinary gift, and learning to understand, respect and protect the natural world is one meaningful way of expressing our love for our Heavenly Father.
At Moolmanshoek, this message is brought to life through the remarkable story of restoration at Moolmanshoek Private Nature Reserve.
The reserve provides a living example of how care, dedication and responsible stewardship can contribute to restoring and protecting our natural environment.
Through our veld school camps, we share this story with learners, helping them understand that their everyday choices can make a positive difference.
Our aim is to encourage a lasting appreciation for nature and inspire young people to become responsible caretakers of creation.
Practical Veld School Activities
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Our veld school programme encourages learners to spend as much time outdoors as possible, discovering valuable skills through practical, hands-on experiences.
Rather than simply learning about the environment, campers are encouraged to observe, explore, participate and develop a deeper understanding of the natural world.
Plant Identification & Environmental Awareness
Discover the fascinating plants of the veld and learn to recognise different species within the natural environment.
Learners explore the importance of plant identification, including understanding which plants may be harmful and why recognising potential dangers in nature matters.
This activity also encourages observation, environmental awareness and respect for the delicate balance of ecosystems.
Direction & Navigation
How do you find your way without modern technology?
Learners are introduced to traditional navigation techniques, including using the sun and stars to understand direction.
These practical outdoor lessons encourage problem-solving, observation and confidence when exploring unfamiliar surroundings.
Shelter Building
Understanding how to find or construct shelter is an important outdoor survival skill.
Campers learn basic shelter-building principles and explore how simple natural materials can be used to create protection from the elements.
The experience encourages creativity, practical thinking, cooperation and resourcefulness.
Basic Veld Survival Skills
Our veld survival activities introduce learners to fundamental principles of staying safe and making responsible decisions in an outdoor environment.
Through practical demonstrations and guided learning opportunities, campers develop greater awareness of their surroundings and the importance of preparation, teamwork and sound judgement.
Farming God's Way – Growing Knowledge, Responsibility & Healthy Food
One of the meaningful learning opportunities in our veld school camps is introducing learners to the principles of Farming God’s Way.
We believe that understanding where food comes from, how plants grow and what it takes to produce healthy vegetables can inspire a greater appreciation for the resources we often take for granted.
Through practical gardening activities, learners discover the fundamentals of planting and growing their own vegetables.
They learn that producing fresh, wholesome food does not necessarily require expensive equipment or complicated methods. With knowledge, dedication, care and a little hard work, even a small vegetable garden can provide valuable food.
These experiences encourage responsibility, patience and an understanding of how we can work with nature rather than against it.
And who knows? Perhaps learning to grow their own vegetables will even encourage a few reluctant vegetable eaters to give them another try!

Building Character & Essential Life Skills
While environmental education forms the foundation of our veld school camps, personal development is also an important part of the experience.
Our programmes incorporate opportunities for learners to reflect on their character, relationships and responsibilities.
Through outdoor activities, group discussions and shared challenges, we encourage growth in several important areas.
Positive Self-Esteem
Helping learners recognise their individual strengths, appreciate their abilities and develop confidence in themselves.
Communication Skills
Encouraging clear communication, active listening and positive interaction with others.
Self-Awareness & Personality
Helping learners better understand their personalities, individual characteristics and how they relate to those around them.
Time Management & Organisation
Introducing the importance of planning, prioritising responsibilities and using time effectively.
Planning for the Future
Encouraging learners to consider their goals, make responsible choices and recognise the importance of preparing for what lies ahead.
Conflict Resolution & Stress Management
Developing awareness of constructive ways to handle disagreements, manage challenging situations and respond to pressure.
These values and life skills complement the outdoor learning experience, helping learners understand that personal responsibility extends to themselves, the people around them and the environment.

A Structured Veld School Programme With Room for Adventure
Our Veld School Camps follow a developed outdoor learning programme built around the Moolmanshoek story of restoration, environmental responsibility and practical veld skills.
The programme provides a meaningful structure for schools and groups that want learners to experience nature while developing a greater understanding of creation care.
For smaller groups, there may also be opportunities to incorporate additional adventure activities, such as abseiling or high ropes, depending on group size, available time and programme requirements.
These activities are discussed during the enquiry process to ensure that the experience remains suitable for the learners attending.
Group sizes: Our Veld School Camps accommodate groups of approximately 20 to 140 participants, subject to programme and accommodation arrangements.
